937 St. Charles Take a step back in time as you enter “Linden Cottage” located in the prestigious community of Rockland. Situated behind large hedges on St. Charles street, a street steeped in history, sits this amazing home with a history of its own. This home has been lovingly and painstakingly restored to the original look and feel that celebrated architect Samuel Maclure intended when he designed It in 1909. A restoration of this magnitude and caliber would cost hundreds of thousands in labour and materials. Countless hours have gone in to removing years of modernizing and renovating and returning this home to the grandeur it deserves. Every detail from doorknobs and hinges to light fixtures and flooring have either been completely restored or replaced with fine antiques to fit the time period. Linden Cottage has 4 bedrooms spread over 2900+ finished square feet on the top 2 floors, with 1500+ square feet of unfinished space in the basement. This large Arts and Crafts style home is situated at the back of the expansive 7400+ square foot lot affording lots of room for the discerning green thumb in the private front yard. There are raised garden beds, and a large variety of plants including rhododendrons, peonies, hydrangea, wisteria, date palms, banana leaf palms and numerous fruit trees (apple, plum pear peach cherry and fig). There are also dozens of exotic perennials which will lead to a bright and colourful springtime. As you enter the home from the front porch you are instantly transported back to 1909 as you take in the rich, dark woodwork of the entryway and receiving hall. The woodwork, wainscoting, beams, and doors throughout the majority of the home have been meticulously restored as closely as possible to their original state back in 1909, revealing the original first-growth fir. In most areas, this entailed careful stripping, many hours of sanding, staining and three to four coats of shellac. Shellac was used just as it was originally to achieve a deep rich amber glow. Past the powder room, with its heated tile floors, and directly off of the receiving hall, you will enter the living room with views of the front gardens through the large bay windows. The grand fireplace with gas insert has two decorative display windows built right into the mantel and provides warmth and coziness on those cooler evenings. The wallpaper in this room is a perfect example of art nouveau wallpaper; the pattern is called “thistle” with colours that you won’t see today. Through the receiving hall, toward the kitchen, you will find the formal dining room. Here, the restored and refinished woodwork continues to shine, including the original built-in cabinets and fireplace mantel. The large windows allow for an abundance of light and the antique chandelier sparkles above the dining table. The warm tones of the wood finishes in the country-style kitchen make the large open space feel very inviting. With windows on two sides, there is no shortage of natural light. The cooktop island works well as a breakfast bar and provides plenty of storage. For ease of access and flow, the wall-oven, double-sized sink, dishwasher and refrigerator are all located along the back wall. At the rear of the home, off of the kitchen is the large updated laundry area, and rear entrance. There is a great window ledge for your indoor plants to flourish and plenty of room for your coats and boots. The small deck off of the back door leads to a nice-sized patio and parking area with plenty of room for at least two vehicles. The roof was just replaced with Fibreglass shingles. The beautifully restored staircase leads you upstairs to an amazing hallway that is open to below and seems even bigger thanks to the wall of windows. All 4 bedrooms open onto this large hallway. There are 2 larger rooms, either of which would lend itself nicely as the master. Both have beautiful wood detailing, fireplaces with tile surrounds and antique mantels. There is a third bedroom that has access from one of the larger rooms making it ideal for a nursery or den/studio. Tucked away in the back corner is another decent-sized room which would be perfect for guests. All of the rooms have original walk-in closets and there is a large linen closet in the hallway beside the stairs. The detail in the bathroom is not to be overlooked. The dark, rich wainscoting combined with William Morris’s “seaweed pattern wallpaper, along with the clawfoot tub, create an oasis one would appreciate at the end of a long day. Downstairs is unfinished with a workspace, ample storage options, outside access, furnace and hot water tank. The furnace was completely refurbished in 2018. This amazing home is within walking distance to Stadacona plaza where you can grab a coffee at Origins bakery or brunch at Shine Café. Take a stroll along Oak Bay avenue and explore the many boutiques, coffee shops and tea houses. Or enjoy the history of the neighbourhood by exploring the grounds of Government House and Craigdarroch Castle. Hop in the car and take a short drive to Willows Beach, The Oak Bay Marina or Clover Point Park. This is a rare opportunity to buy a Samuel McLure home that has been lovingly restored by hand. This amazing home is a historical gem in the heart of Rockland and is priced at $1,549,000.00. Call Shawn to arrange a viewing today. |
